Are Your Beverage Choices Harming Your Oral Health?
With summer right around the corner, we know that many of our patients are going to be attending parties, BBQ, and may be traveling as well. Attending a special event or a trip is a time to indulge in foods and drinks that may be harmful for your oral health. You may be familiar with foods that are not good for your oral health, but did you know there are many beverages that are harmful as well? Sugary drinks such as soft drinks, lemonade, and fruit punch flow in abundance during the summer months. It is important to remember that it is wise to consume these types of beverages in moderation.
Beverages that Can Harm Your Teeth
Aside from drinking sugary drinks during the summer, we know that we also have patients who have a habit of sipping on sugary coffee drinks, soft drinks, and seltzer throughout the day. Not only is the sugar content in many beverages concerning, but a number of drinks are also highly acidic, which can be severely damaging to your tooth enamel. Enjoying certain drinks is fine in moderation, but when you drink them continuously every day throughout the day, you are adding more and more plaque-causing bacteria to your mouth. Drinks that can be harmful to your oral health include:
- Fruit juice
- Sweetened teas and coffees
- Seltzer and sparkling water
- Soft drinks
- Sports beverages
- Alcoholic drinks
- Chocolate milk
- Energy drinks
Drink Water
Aside from being beneficial to your overall health, drinking water can be beneficial to your oral health as well. Drinking water can help prevent dry mouth and rid your mouth of lingering food and bacteria.
